Shradh Paksha (Pitru Paksha) 2025: What You Should Know

Shradh Paksha, also known as Pitru Paksha, is one of the most important periods in the Hindu calendar. It is a time when families honor their ancestors, express gratitude, and seek blessings for peace, prosperity, and harmony. In 2025, Shradh Paksha will be observed from September 7 to September 21.

This sacred fortnight holds deep spiritual and cultural significance, and understanding its meaning can help us connect with our roots in a mindful way.

What is Shradh Paksha?

Shradh Paksha, also called Pitru Paksha, literally means “the fortnight of the ancestors.” During these 15 lunar days, Hindus perform special rituals called Shradh to pay homage to their departed family members.

It is believed that during this time, the souls of our ancestors (Pitrs) visit the Earth. Performing Shradh rituals with devotion helps in satisfying their souls and receiving their blessings in return.

Why is Shradh Paksha Important?

The importance of Shradh Paksha lies in the belief that our lives are deeply connected to our ancestors. Their blessings are considered vital for:

  • Family well-being
  • Financial stability
  • Health and prosperity
  • Removal of karmic obstacles

Hindus believe that by offering food, water, and prayers, they can help their ancestors attain peace and ensure harmony in their own lives.

Key Rituals During Pitru Paksha

  1. Tarpan – Offering water mixed with sesame seeds and barley to ancestors.
  2. Pind Daan – Offering rice balls with ghee and black sesame seeds to departed souls.
  3. Brahman Bhoj – Feeding Brahmins or the needy, as it is believed to please the ancestors.
  4. Charity (Daan) – Donating food, clothes, and essentials in the name of ancestors.

Performing these rituals with faith is said to free families from Pitru Dosha, which is believed to cause obstacles in career, finances, and relationships.
